#26 Is Keeping Horses Without Pasture Still Species-Appropriate?

Horses evolved as steppe animals, spending many hours each day roaming across vast landscapes while continuously searching for fibrous, low-energy forage. Modern horse pastures, however, often have very little in common with these natural habitats.

So what does that mean for today's horses? Is keeping a horse without pasture automatically not species-appropriate? Or can avoiding pasture actually be the healthier and more responsible choice for some horses?

In this episode, Christina Fritz explores one of the most controversial topics in horse management. She explains why there is no simple yes-or-no answer and why both the quality of the pasture and the horse's metabolic health play a crucial role.

You'll learn:
✔️ Why horses evolved to thrive in sparse steppe environments
✔️ Why many modern horse pastures differ dramatically from these natural habitats
✔️ Which horses are particularly sensitive to sugar-rich grazing
✔️ Why limiting pasture time isn't always the solution it seems to be
✔️ Why a well-designed paddock or paddock trail can sometimes be the more horse-friendly alternative
✔️ Why pasture restoration and metabolic rehabilitation should go hand in hand
✔️ Why the long-term goal should still be to help as many horses as possible return to safe pasture access

Species-appropriate horse management doesn't necessarily mean turning every horse out onto any pasture. It means creating an environment that supports natural movement, social interaction, continuous access to forage, and long-term health—while taking each horse's individual needs into account.
